SME Interview Gary Bedoe Restaurant Owner (written interview)

1. How many hours a day do you work on average?
Typically 7 hours in the restaurant and 2-3 hours at home on the computer and phone.

2. Please describe/outline your typical day.
Every day I wake up at 8:00am and get coffee. Then I review emails, text messages from any employees, and then check social media for any reviews or comments.

3. How has being an entrepreneur affected your family life?
It’s had a profound effect on my life and my family. Some of it good, and some of it bad. The good is it has been a learning experience for the whole family. My children and grandchildren have gotten involved and realize and respect the work it takes to operate a business. We have had the opportunity to work together and learn about not just the labor but the management, marketing, and finances involved to be successful.

4. What motivates you?
Being successful as a business, business owner, and a good employer.

5. How do you generate new ideas?
I get new ideas by receiving customer feedback, asking employees for feedback, reading articles about the industry, and checking out the competition.

6. What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?
Failure and financial problems or “losing everything.”

7. Are you happy and what would you change?
I am happy. Financing the building and owning, if possible, instead of leasing the building.

8. What are some of the mistakes you wished you could’ve avoided?
Being too lenient and at times too much trust in an employee.

9. How did you handle adversity and doubt?
Communication. Seeking advice from professionals, peers, family, employees, and customers.

10. Do You Plan On Growing Your Business?
At one time I did but due to economy in 2009, lack of staffing, financial stress, and age I decided not to.
11. How Did You Build Your Team?
Hired from want ads, referrals from employees and promoted from within.

12. How Can I Be A Good Leader?
Treat employees with respect and communication. Show patience and confidence.
