Interview with Kelly Laughter, owner of Fletcher Grading

1. Tell us about yourself.
I am a General Contractor licensed in Highway, Public Utilities and Building

2. Why did you open up a grading business?
Our company began in 1995 as a landscaping company and transitioned into a grading company around 2001. Our focus changed because of increased demand from our customers for grading and excavating services.

3. What are Pros of owning your own business?
You get to be the decision maker. Also it is very rewarding to look at a finished project and know that your company is responsible for it.

4. What are cons of owning your own business?
The amount of time that must be put in to start and keep your business successful can sometimes be overwhelming. My average work week is 55-60 hours and even when I leave the office I am still somewhat working because my weekends are spent visiting projects and planning for new projects. Owning a business is a 24/7 commitment

5. Is there anything you would have done different when starting your business?
No, not really. Because we started as such a small landscaping company our startup costs were relatively small (less than 25K). We were able to grow our company as the demand for services increased.

6. Any advice you have for someone who has just become an entrepreneur?
Be prepared to put in a lot of time. Don’t expect to see great financial returns in the first few years. Reinvest your profits back into the company to expand your business. Once your business is established, try to put back some money as a cushion for unexpected expenses or economic down times.
