Turning Point Services Interview with Tom Brittain -by Arlene Childers (ME Cohort 9)

Turning Point Services is a for profit corporation that provides service and support to persons with developmental disabilities. Primarily in western North Carolina, Turning Point Services has thirty-four locations including Raleigh, New Bern, Charlotte, and Asheville. Turning Point provides one thousand persons with disabilities day programs, group homes, and independent living apartments. The focus of Turning Point Services is to help persons with disabilities and their families become more independent and successful in their homes and communities.

Tom Brittain, owner of Turning Point Services, worked for thirty-one years in NC State affiliated public mental health programs. Tom wanted to help families and work independently of government regulations, while being his own boss. In 1997, Tom “tried” to retire and planned to work part-time. He opened Turning Point Services and is now working more than ever.

Tom Brittain believes that giving back to the community is important. He purchased an old K-12 school building in the Brendletown community and has restored it to become a vital part of the community. Pilot Mountain School now has a coffee shop serving breakfast and lunch, an auditorium that citizens can rent for special functions, and several small businesses that operate out of school classrooms. Tom’s plan for the future is to publicize the activities of Pilot Mountain School to the greater Burke County area. His hope is to make Pilot Mountain School available to families with disabilities.

Tom’s advice for others who are considering starting their own business is:
• Know your product and have a passion for it
• Know your target market
• Business structure is important
• Work Hard

Tom is very thankful for his wonderful experiences helping families with developmental disabilities. He has watched kids grow up, adults go to work, and people live independently. He hopes to continue helping others and giving back.
